Brownstone Front, page 263

Two-thirds cup chocolate, 2/3 cup sugar, 1/2 cup sweet milk, 1 egg yolk, cook on top of stove. Second part: 1 cup sugar, 1/2 cup butter, 1/2 cup sweet milk, yolks of 3 eggs, whites of 2 eggs, 1 teaspoonful vanilla, 2 cups flour. Stir all together.


Burnt Sugar Cake, page 264

One and a half cups sugar, 1/2 cup butter creamed, 3 eggs beaten separate, 1 cup water, 2 cups flour, 2 heaping teaspoons baking powder, 1 teaspoon vanilla; 1 cup sugar burnt black, let burn black, put in 1/2 cup water and let boil until thin syrup, add 2 table-spoons in cake and little in frosting.
