One ounce of salts of tartar, 1 ounce of amonia {sic} (dry), put in a gallon jug; then take iron pot, dissolve 1 box of Lewis lye in 1 gallon and pint of hot water, when cold pour in the salts and amonia. One teacup of solution to five pails of hot water.

Rub a piece of butter as large as an egg into a quart of flour; add a tumbler of sweet milk, 2 eggs, 3 table-spoonfuls of sugar, 3 teaspoonfuls of baking powder, and 1 teaspoonful of salt. Mix the baking powder, sugar and salt into the flour, add the eggs, butter, melted, and the milk. Stir all together and bake in well greased pans. Eat warm with butter.
