Mock Mince Pie, page 102

Four rolled soda crackers, 1 cupful of boiling water, 1/4 cupful butter, 1 cupful sugar, light brown, 1/2 cupful molasses, 1/2 cupful vinegar, 1 cupful raisins, 1 teaspoonful each of cloves, nutmeg and cinnamon, 2 eggs. This makes two pies.

Take one cake of yeast in a pint of warm water, then boil two good sized potatoes, mash them in one quart of flour with the potato water and make a thick batter, then stir the yeast in and let it sit over night then take five quarts of flour and three table-spoonfuls of salt and three table-spoonfuls of sugar and one cup of lard; take one pint of warm water and mix a stiff dough; put in a warm place and let it get light, then work it down and put it in the pans and let is {sic} rise and bake in a slow oven one hour.
