Baked Beans, page 76

Put a pint of beans in a steamer and let them steam for two hours, then put them in a crock with enough water to cover them, salt and pepper to taste; add a slice of bacon and cover up tightly. Place them in the oven and let bake until done.


Plain Cake, page 164

One cup of sugar, half cup of butter, 2 eggs, 1 cup of milk, 2 teaspoonfuls of baking powder, enough flour to make it quite thick; flavor to taste.


Ginger Bread, page 198

One cup of molasses, 1 cup of sugar, 1/2 a cup of butter, 1/2 a cup of sour milk, even teaspoonful of soda, 1 table-spoonful of ginger, 2 eggs, spices to taste, flour as for cake.
