OATHS OF OFFICERS OF THE 76TH EMM, Oct/Nov 1964

From personal journal entry of 14 Nov 1996:

"The attached list of oaths taken by officers of the 76th Enrolled Missouri Militia is photocopied from the back three pages of a probate record book stored in the southwest attic of the LC Courthouse in Mt. Vernon, MO. The book has a mushy feel: the cover and binding are in fragile condition. The name is illegible but entries include bills of appraisal, inventories of property and sale bills beginning 18 July 1855. The inside back cover is stamped "microfilmed." {Probably microfilmed by LDS during the early 1970s.}

An example of the entries:

LIST OF OATHS TAKEN BY OFFICERS OF 76th EMM: {Oct/Nov 1864}
The column headings on the original list are Rank, Company, Name, Years {age}, Residence, Nativity, Date of Oath. The original list, in date order, reveals some family and neighborhood groups. It is presented here in alphabetical order for convenient surname research. If your relative is on the list, I recommend that you check the names and information of others who served in the same company or enrolled on the same date.
The EMM, as I remember from conversation with Jeff Patrick at Wilson's Creek National Battlefield in Springfield, were state troops of the Union persuasion, organized locally with short terms of enlistment. There are other Lawrence County EMM oaths on record with earlier dates of enrollment.

The following list of Officer's Oaths, 76th EMM, Oct/Nov 1864 enrollment, was abstracted by Judy Reustle from original Lawrence County documents and may be copied or archived for reference, educational or personal use.

The following except from War of the Rebellion helps to explain the situation in Southwest Missouri one month prior to this enrollment.

The report of Col. John D Allen, Seventh Provisional Regiment, Enrolled Missouri Militia, 2 Sep 1864, regarding the skirmish near Mt. Vernon, MO.; from WOR (War of the Rebellion, Official Records), 1885, Series I, Volume XLI; part 1, pp 737-738:

Colonel: I have this morning received information that there was about 400 rebels that made the attempt to take Mount Vernon on last Friday. Captain Stotts, who was at Cave Spring with twenty-five men of his own command and a portion of Captain Stemmens' company, discovered the rebels in force; dispatched a messenger to me immediately. I sent Captain Morris with sixty men...met {the rebels} five miles west of Mt. Vernon...had to fall back...I collected all the militia that was available and went to his relief...on arriving there I was informed by the citizens that the rebels had gone southwest...soon discovered about fifty men on the prairie in line. I formed line and ordered a charge...but after running about three miles I got close enough to discover that I was chasing Captain Stotts...I have something over 300 men very poorly armed, good men and will fight...My informant as to Brooks is Major Moore; he has just returned from a scout near Berryville, in Carroll County, Ark., and brings me the information...I intend to hold this country if possible. The time is close at hand when I will stand in need of help, but if I can get it in time I think I can make it pay. I will refer you to Captain Kelso, Captain Allen, Lieutenant Bowers as to the real situation of this country and also the importance, &c.
Very respectfully, your obedient servant,
John D Allen, Colonel, Commanding.
{To: Col. J. D. Brutcher, Acting Assistant Adjutant-General, Springfield, MO.}
